Name: The Nonantum Resort
Location: Kennebunkport, Maine
Tell us a little bit about the history of the resort: We were built in 1883 and opened in 1884. We’re one of the few remaining grand hotels of the that era. We’re also located right on the riverfront. For an informative timeline of resort milestones click here.
About the venue: We have one hundred and nine guest rooms with a back lawn that is spacious and expansive. We also have a lighthouse on the property. Inside there is a gorgeous ballroom and outside on the lawn is the perfect spot for tented weddings. Some couples decide on an outdoor ceremony and then people come inside for the reception. We’ve had many lobster bakes and games of corn hole going. There is a beautiful room for the bridal party to get ready where they can enjoy gorgeous views and gear up for the big day. We’re up the street from St. Anne’s Church, it’s a bit of a heftier fee to get married there, but the setting is spectacular and it’s right on the coastline. Another one of our crowd pleasers is an original Otis elevator with a chain door!
What is your busy season? We’re pretty much busy through our opening at the end of April until we close in mid-December. If brides are still looking for 2015 dates it’s all about Fridays and Sundays. It’s almost half price. For 2016 we have plenty of dates still available. The main tourism season is July 4th to Columbus Day, but the winter offers some fun events like breakfast with Santa and other holiday themed events.
What sort of events is it available for? We do everything from rehearsal dinners, bridal showers, baby showers, corporate retreats (we have a kayak outing or can arrange cooking classes nearby as activities). We also are the venue for the local high school prom. We host a lot of nonprofit events too!
Is there a favorite or historic event that they’ve hosted? President Bush was here to kick off the Kennebunkport river race, it’ a midsummer festival and we’re catering one the events for Barbara Bush’s 90th birthday at the Kennebunk River Club. We also participate in the Kennebunkport food and wine festival.
What makes it stand out as a venue? You would think of all of the things, it would be the beauty of the space, but actually, it’s the staff—that is why we’re a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence winner. We have a long-standing staff, including our director of sales. Everyone is very friendly and family oriented. There’s a really warm, welcoming spirit. It’s elegant and casual. Not pretentious. We try to make dreams come true here.
Do you have any recommendations for brides that may be considering the venue? I think the biggest thing is that everyone is looking at Pinterest and people come in with these huge expectations, but it’s your day, do what feels true to you. There is so much that can pull you in another direction, but the biggest thing is that this is your day and it needs to be special and memorable for you.
What is the business motto The Nonantum functions under? Our tagline is ‘where traditions begin’, we have couples that got married here and return for their anniversary or they come back with their kids. Guests keep coming back year after year for family events. We have a groom who was married here twelve years ago and just booked a memorial service for his father. It’s a special place.
