5 Wedding Invitation Styles Made Perfect

We can’t get enough of beautiful wedding stationery here at Bliss Celebrations Guide, and who can blame us? They’re the first visual glimpse of what your wedding guests can expect to see and experience on your big day! An effective invitation suite builds the excitement by establishing a clear concept with an artful and eye-catching design approach. Emily Hostetler, founder and lead designer of  Paper Moss, walked us through a few different styles she’s created for clients and explained why each one works well.

Traditional

Emily states this universal truth for wedding invitations: you can’t go wrong with a classic black and white combination to emphasize the formality of your wedding. Sarah and Mike’s invitation suite above perfectly epitomizes the traditional ideal with its neutral color palette, custom calligraphy monogram, and metallic detail to amplify the elegance. The couple incorporated stripes into their design, though, for a special twist that keeps their invites from looking too stuffy.

Floral

Garden-themed paper goods often run the risk of looking kitschy, but Cindy and Chris’s invitations are an exception. Emily explains that their use of a single vivid color is integral to the successful beauty of the design—a black and white treatment simply wouldn’t feel as fun and relaxed. The etched flowers make the botanical motif clear, but the font’s whimsical treatment and hand-drawn map really accentuate it.

Modern

Modern but quirky invitations are a refreshing spin for weddings, but it’s an aesthetic that can look busy if it’s not done carefully, warns Emily. Every detail included needs to intentional, so striving for minimalism is key. The distinct design of Marah and Dan’s invitations relies almost solely on the different font styles inscribed on a modern day layout versus the typical centered script.

Nautical

For the coastal-minded folk among us, a nautical theme is the obvious way to go. Laura and Chris were able to convey their love for all things maritime in an understated fashion, avoiding huge anchors or prominent stripes, and opting for dainty pennants in the universal navy and white color anthem of sea. Familiar but subtle icons representative of the ocean inhibited any potential cheese-factor here.

Vintage

It’s hard to ignore the rising vintage trend in wedding design, and Emily was able to capture the style elegantly in Christine and Jim’s invitation suite, while still retaining its trademark quaint charm and casual feel. Touches like the lace pattern, hand-drawn rustic farm animals, and craft paper envelope are elevated by the delicate calligraphy to strike the perfect balance between ornate and homely.

Put a Ring on it!

Engagement rings often steal the spotlight when it comes to wedding excitement—so much attention is given to them that wedding band details are overlooked. We chatted with Long’s Jewelers to redeem the humble wedding band. They gave helpful tips and advice that will help you figure out what type of ring you should go for, plus what’s the jewelry buzz at the moment. After all, these are the rings BOTH of you will be wearing for a lifetime!

But let’s talk for a bit about the basics first…

Surprisingly, Long’s Jewelers recommends NOT going for the gold when it comes to metal type. Good ol’ platinum is the best type of metal. It’s virtually perfect due to its durability, and it’s hypoallergenic for those with sensitivities. Try to avoid tungsten rings at all costs, because they can’t be resized and can’t be easily removed if they ever get stuck on your finger (and no amount of butter is worth greasing that finger up to pop off a ring). Even white gold isn’t as practical as platinum, as it will have to be rhodium plated frequently to maintain its finish.

So how do you know you’ve got a legit ring? It’s as easy as squinting really hard and checking out the inside of the band, which should state the metal type and grade. If you’re in the business of buying rings and you’re not seeing that info, run the other way. You want to know exactly what you’re paying for—after all, it’s a nice chunk of change you’ll be spending!

Long’s Jewelers suggests giving yourself at least two months before the big day to special order your ring, and factor in as many costs as you can beforehand to lessen the sticker shock. Consider metal type, total diamond carat weight, and finger size, and keep in mind that with diamond or gemstone bands, the larger the finger size, the higher the band cost will be as more stones will be used. This leads us to believe that perhaps there really is something behind the whole wedding diet fad…

Now that we have the fundamentals out of the way, we can talk what’s hot. Long’s Jewelers was able to give us some insight on what’s popular in ring world and according to them, trend-seeking ladies should look for:

  • Delicate stacking bands
  • Rose gold and yellow gold metals
  • Diamond eternity bands
  • Sapphire and diamond bands

  • Two-tone metal bands
  • Beveled edge bands
  • Hammered finishes

And if you really want to take your rings to the next level, Long’s Jewelers also offered up these unique ideas:

  • Personally engraving a message in your handwriting
  • Choosing a mixed metal ring (for example, yellow gold + white gold + rose gold)
  • Choosing a colored gemstone band instead of traditional diamonds
  • Engraving your partner’s fingerprint on your band’s interior through the brand Furrer-Jacot
