What’s the history behind Newport Vineyards? There is so much history! It dates back to 1917, when the great-grandfather of our owners (John and Paul Nunes) purchased the land that is Nunes Farm and is now protected farmland housing 30 acres of our nearly 60 acres of vineyards. Newport Vineyards was incorporated in 1995 by John and Paul Nunes, on the heels of part of the original vineyard, which was planted by retired Navy Captain Richard Alexander. Now in its 20th anniversary year, the Nunes brothers have completed a two-year multi-million dollar renovation and expansion elevating Newport Vineyards to a true food, beverage and events destination in Newport County.

Can you give a few details about the new wedding space? Our new wedding venue, The Meadow Room (pictured above), is truly unique. Couples enjoy the beautiful backdrop of vines, coupled with a romantic refined rustic décor. The walls are adorned with reclaimed New England barn wood, paired with polished concrete floors, wood beams, barn wood doors, a glass door overhead that spills out onto a covered porch overlooking the vineyard. In addition, our winery’s bottling room and Tank Room can be seen by guests through a glass wall, so the winery is always incorporated into the aesthetic of the space.

What makes the vineyard a special place for couples to get married? We are fortunate enough to have the perfect marriage of a beautiful setting, along with easy access to downtown Newport, Providence, and Boston. We are also one of the few vineyards in the region that offer indoor venue facilities.

When’s the best time of the year to book the vineyard for a wedding? We have the ability to offer weddings year round. In fact, we have several winter weddings coming up this year—a snowy vineyard makes a beautiful backdrop! Certainly May – October is a perfect time of year to get married in the Newport County region. Specifically for a vineyard, it’s good to keep in mind the growing season. The vines will begin to bud in May, are full bloom mid-summer, and then our harvest season begins early October. The Meadow Room is perfect in the warmer seasons with the large glass overhead door open, creating a beautiful indoor/outdoor flow. However, it’s so cozy with its reclaimed barn wood walls in the off-season.

How many wedding receptions has the new space already accommodated? This is the first year in our new space, as the Meadow Room opened in early June this year. We began opening it up for booking last October, and have 10 weddings booked this year. For 2016, we already have over 20 weddings booked. While we do expect this to grow, we look to book only one wedding per day.

Vendor spotlight on…The Nonantum Resort

Name: The Nonantum Resort

Location: Kennebunkport, Maine

Tell us a little bit about the history of the resort: We were built in 1883 and opened in 1884. We’re one of the few remaining grand hotels of the that era. We’re also located right on the riverfront. For an informative timeline of resort milestones click here.

About the venue: We have one hundred and nine guest rooms with a back lawn that is spacious and expansive. We also have a lighthouse on the property. Inside there is a gorgeous ballroom and outside on the lawn is the perfect spot for tented weddings. Some couples decide on an outdoor ceremony and then people come inside for the reception. We’ve had many lobster bakes and games of corn hole going. There is a beautiful room for the bridal party to get ready where they can enjoy gorgeous views and gear up for the big day. We’re up the street from St. Anne’s Church, it’s a bit of a heftier fee to get married there, but the setting is spectacular and it’s right on the coastline. Another one of our crowd pleasers is an original Otis elevator with a chain door!

What is your busy season? We’re pretty much busy through our opening at the end of April until we close in mid-December. If brides are still looking for 2015 dates it’s all about Fridays and Sundays. It’s almost half price. For 2016 we have plenty of dates still available. The main tourism season is July 4th to Columbus Day, but the winter offers some fun events like breakfast with Santa and other holiday themed events.

What sort of events is it available for? We do everything from rehearsal dinners, bridal showers, baby showers, corporate retreats (we have a kayak outing or can arrange cooking classes nearby as activities). We also are the venue for the local high school prom. We host a lot of nonprofit events too!

Is there a favorite or historic event that they’ve hosted? President Bush was here to kick off the Kennebunkport river race, it’ a midsummer festival and we’re catering one the events for Barbara Bush’s 90th birthday at the Kennebunk River Club. We also participate in the Kennebunkport food and wine festival.

What makes it stand out as a venue? You would think of all of the things, it would be the beauty of the space, but actually, it’s the staff—that is why we’re a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence winner. We have a long-standing staff, including our director of sales. Everyone is very friendly and family oriented. There’s a really warm, welcoming spirit. It’s elegant and casual. Not pretentious. We try to make dreams come true here.

Do you have any recommendations for brides that may be considering the venue? I think the biggest thing is that everyone is looking at Pinterest and people come in with these huge expectations, but it’s your day, do what feels true to you. There is so much that can pull you in another direction, but the biggest thing is that this is your day and it needs to be special and memorable for you.

What is the business motto The Nonantum functions under? Our tagline is ‘where traditions begin’, we have couples that got married here and return for their anniversary or they come back with their kids. Guests keep coming back year after year for family events. We have a groom who was married here twelve years ago and just booked a memorial service for his father. It’s a special place.

festive red, white, and blue wedding

When choosing a color palette and motif for their wedding, Amy and Tom decided on a red, white, and blue USA meets the UK theme. Since the bride is American and the groom is British and many guests would be traveling from England, they wanted to honor both cultures. This wedding was planned to perfection to the very last detail. British and American patriotism could be found everywhere, from the flag adorned bean bag toss to the breathtaking star-spangled tent. The day was made magical by an all-star collaboration of vendors including Wendy Joblon Events, Sayles Livingston, Exquisite Events, The Catered Affair, Table Toppers, Be Our Guest, Rentals Unlimited, Sperry Tent, Newport Tent, Folia, and Confectionary Designs.
