Vendor Spotlight On: The Stone House

Vendor Spotlight is on The Stone House; newest addition to the Newport Experience collection of properties, the Stone House is a luxury resort on the quaint shore of Little Compton, RI.

1. How did your business come to be?

The original four-story building was constructed in 1854 as a private residence and was once home to David Sisson and his son, Henry Sisson, a civil war hero. It was converted to an inn during the 1920s and an old tap room remains in the basement that was once a speakeasy during the Prohibition.

The Stone House recently underwent comprehensive renovations costing an estimated $12 million incorporating many green technologies including a geothermal heating and cooling system. The Stone House was also named to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

The property features spacious and well-appointed guest rooms and suites, a restaurant, and a private beach.  There is also a renovated barn on the grounds that features guest rooms and a beautiful function space with an outdoor terrace and gorgeous water views.

 2. What are the services you offer?

Wedding venue, rehearsal dinners, social and private gatherings, and corporate events.

3. Where are you located?

We are located at the tip of Sakonnet Point in Little Compton, RI – 122 Sakonnet Point Rd., Little Compton, RI.

4. How far in advance do you recommend clients to book?

1-2 years in advance

5. What is one piece of advice you always give to brides?

The advice we always give our brides is to book your wedding venue first in the planning process, as most venues typically book 1-2 years out. Once you have your wedding venue secured, everything else will fall into place.

Vendor Spotlight On: New Bedford Whaling Museum

Vendor Spotlight is on the New Bedford Whaling Museum; this historical museum was recently renovated to include a beautiful event space with dramatic windows overlooking the water.

1 How did your business come to be?

Founded in 1903, the New Bedford Whaling Museum encourages visitors to discover the underwater world of whales, the dramatic history of whaling and its impact, and the maritime history of Southcoast Massachusetts. As an event space, this historic setting allows you to depart from traditional venues and give your guests an experience they’ll never forget. Nestled among 18th and 19th century homes and cobblestone streets, with unparalleled harbor views, the Museum is a distinctive venue for intimate gatherings, business meetings and large celebrations. Your guests will enjoy beautiful galleries, event spaces, and full-service catering by Russell Morin Fine Catering & Events.

2. What services do you offer?

The Whaling Museum has an exclusive relationship with Russell Morin Fine Catering & Events, a full-service caterer. Russ and his team have access to all the resources needed to run your event seamlessly. Russ creates unique menus and proposals for each client, so your one-of-a-kind event reflects your style and tastes. His professional staff can assist with a ceremony, provide experienced service personnel, a “day-of” coordinator, and all the essential items and special accessories needed to ensure your event unfolds smoothly. We have seven event spaces, large and intimate, but our most popular wedding spaces are Harbor View Gallery, Bourne Building (home to the Lagoda ship model – largest in the world), Cook memorial Theater, and outside on the Museum’s plaza.

3. Where are you located?

The Whaling Museum is located within the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park at 18 Johnny Cake Hill. We are across the street from the historic Mariners’ Home and Seamen’s Bethel, made famous in Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick and operated by the New Bedford Port Society. The Museum collaborates with the Seamen’s Bethel to recommend that space for wedding ceremonies.  The contact information to book the Bethel for a ceremony is manager@nullportsociety.org  or 508 992-3295.

4. How far in advance do you recommend clients to book?

Clients are booking about one year out from their wedding day. It is always great to get a jump start on planning by selecting a date as soon as possible. Saturday rentals are the first ones to go and tend to book up quickly.

5. What is one piece of advice you always give to brides?

Have fun with the planning! The process goes in a blink of an eye. You’ll enjoy the journey if you work with someone who can help with the details. The Planning Coordinator provided by Morin’s at the Museum takes your stress away by helping with the process of menu selections, rentals, and coordinating the day-of, so you will have nothing else to do but have fun!
