Tent Celebrations

A tent is a blank canvas. You have the ability to make it is as fancy or as casual as you want. Whether your tent is the back-up plan in case it rains or the main event, Sperry Tents has one you are sure to love.

1. Tell us the history of Sperry Tents.

Sperry Tents began in 1979, when founder Steve Sperry was invited to a neighborhood party. A sailmaker who designed sails and marine canvas for South Coast boat owners, Steve decided to apply his skills to something a little different: he constructed his own party tent.  From this first prototype, Sperry Tents was born, and a revolution in event tent aesthetics began. In 1996, Steve’s son, Tim, took over ownership and has since grown the company from one rental office in Mass. into a large family of licensed providers across the country and abroad.

2. Do you offer a variety of sizes? If so, what are they?

Yes, Sperry Tents are available in a wide range of sizes, from 24- or 32-foot rounds for cocktails and lounge areas to larger, more expansive ovals that can accommodate both dinner and dancing. When guest counts rise, couples and planners rely on the largest available Sperry Tents, including the biggest: the 66’ x 126’, whose setup involves 10 center poles and 344 perimeter poles. And for something a little unique, couples enjoy our signature blue star tents, which are crafted from navy sailcloth and dotted with white stars.

3. Do you have a permanent tent at any local venues?

The makers of Sperry Tents, Sperry Fabric Architecture, are fabulous designers: their creations are no less than fabric masterpieces. Besides Sperry Tents for rent, they also design and construct seasonal and year-long installations for luxurious venues wedding across Southern New England, an exclusive list that includes Willowdale Estate, Castle Hill Inn, Newport Yachting Center, and Wequassett Resort and Golf Club.

4. Walk us through a consultation with a client who would like to rent a Sperry Tents.

Based on guest count, dining table shape, and whether a dance floor or band stage is needed, our experienced event professionals can create an initial estimate outlining the tent and equipment required. Then, we always recommend a complimentary site check to determine the tent’s exact location and address any leveling, catering, or rain considerations. As the wedding date draws closer, couples firm up their lighting choices and can even create a detailed diagram of their reception layout using our online planner.

After The Hunt

Flora and fauna are contrasted with a curated collection of nineteenth and twentieth century art for this After the Hunt feast at the Harvard Art Museums.

The surrounding architecture and early twentieth century art collection at the Harvard Art Museums inspired floral designer Marc Hall of Marc Hall Design and Nilda Martin of Reserve Modern Event Rentals to create a sumptuous after the hunt rehearsal dinner. “The evening was curated with appointments that blurred the distinction between modern and old world, Marc explained. “Modern furniture and couture design elements juxtaposed a Renaissance inspired display of food, flora and fauna.” Setting the tone for the night was an exceptional invitation suite designed by Tribe Design + Events. Custom made metallic marbled paper was encased in an envelope hand-sewn with metallic thread and sealed with vintage stamps describing what could be expected of the feast. Textures were prominent throughout the overall design from décor to fashion. Tables were covered with luxurious linens ranging from quilted silk in game prints to crushed velvet in rich reds from Table Toppers, while a fur stole and a feather bow tie accessorized the bride and groom. The grazing table was decorated with an elaborate display of food and floral sculptures. A mouth-watering roast was surrounded by colorful root vegetables and decadent cakes prepared by The Catered Affair. An artisan copper bar with an antler mirrored backdrop from Reserve Modern Event Rentals introduced metallic elements to the décor. Adjacent to the bar, an event lounge was comprised of lacquered knotted tree stumps that served as cocktail tables, a gilded crown chair, and contrasting animal hide rugs. A menagerie of curiosities such as skulls, horns, and feathers completed the design. “Our belief is that a great party starts by creating a thoughtful and beautifully styled environment that is not only visually stunning, but functional and exciting for guests. We accentuated an already gorgeous space by adding areas that became event jewelry and focal “wows” transforming the familiar environment,” explained Nilda Martin of Reserve Modern Event Rentals.

Tell us the history of Smith & Wollensky.

A prime spotting place for local celebrities, political figures and even a few movie stars, Smith & Wollensky has long been considered a premier dining destination. Offering simply elegant food, attention to detail in service, and a refined setting, the experience is uniquely American.  Smith & Wollensky continues to symbolize the timeless luxury of Prime USDA steaks, premium seafood, signature cocktails and award-winning wines. Smith & Wollensky opened in the Back Bay “Castle” in 2004, and is one of the most unique dining experiences and venues in Boston, indulging guests’ sense of history and feeling of luxury in its grand architecture and space, and rich furnishings.  The historic stone and brick castle was built in 1891 and originally served as the headquarters for the First Corps of Cadets, and is now listed on the National Historic Register. The first floor gun room, social hall and museum floor now feature the bar and main dining room. With four floors and 26,000 square feet of space, The castle boasts an expansive selection of private dining and event rooms, including the “Battle Room” ballroom – with features such as working fireplaces, a balcony, high ceilings and historic artifacts.  The uniqueness and history of the venue make it one of the most coveted settings in Boston to host corporate and social occasions.  The venue hosts groups from 20 to 250 for seated dining events and receptions.

About Smith & Wollensky Restaurant Group

Smith & Wollensky Restaurant Group owns and operates iconic Smith & Wollensky locations in Boston Back Bay, Boston Atlantic Wharf, Chicago, Las Vegas, Columbus, Houston and two restaurants in Boston, as well as its new Wollensky’s Grill in Chicago. Smith & Wollensky Restaurant Group opened its first European location in London in spring 2015.

What types of events can you hold at the Boston Castle location?

We host all types of events here at the Castle from corporate to social events, including bar/bat mitzvah, galas, rehearsal dinners, and of course WEDDINGS! We do it all!

When consulting with the client are there signature dishes you always suggest? Are they offered on the regular restaurant menu or just catering?

That’s a hard one, as I have many.  I really enjoy selling our hors d’oeuvres. What makes them really special is that every item is prepared in house from scratch with all fresh local ingredients. A couple of my favorites would be our signature Wollensky’s Beef Sliders, the combination of beef and bacon brings a perfect balance of sweetness together. Buffalo Fried Oysters topped with crumbles bleu cheese… need I say more? Lucky for all, both of these items are available on our Bar Menu for anyone that dines at the restaurant!

How often do you change the menu (regular & catering)?

We change the menu twice per year, in the Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter, offering guests new preparations of our steaks, seafood, sides and hors d’oeuvres that incorporate the freshest produce and flavors of the season.
