Wooden Wonders by the River

Reclaimed wooden design elements are softened with lush summer greens, creamy white bouquets with pops of periwinkle, and a furry companion.

The vision was an intimate wedding along the Marstons Mills river edge, inspired by a Dory rowboat that was handcrafted by a local Cape Cod craftsman. “I am fortunate every day to walk out my back door and be inspired by the moving Marstons Mills river, lush trees, grapevine, and other natural flora indigenous to Cape Cod. The stone walls and antique buildings inspire me to follow my love for everything natural, vintage, and rustic,” Karen Taddei of Lilacs Florals described. A garland of textural garden flowers lined the rustic picnic table from Be Our Guest. French round back chairs and ivory place settings added a touch of modern refinement to the table design. Over in the lounge area, a weathered door was placed upon a wrought iron base to serve as the table where sugary confections fromArtisan Bake Shop could be enjoyed. Donning ethereal gowns from A Little Something White, the bridal party cozied up with Ted the Golden Retriever on an antique sofa and watched the sunset.

Vendor Spotlight On: Sayles Livingston Design

Sayles Livingston Design provides advice, vegetation and accompanying décor/staging for any size event from elaborate destination-wedding to informal seminar to cutting-edge product launch. They go anywhere; work with any budget; and, in the process, and do their best to properly steward the environment that supports our work. Their services include frank, detailed consultations as well as full onsite installations.

How did your business come to be?

Sayles is a graduate of Brown University where she studied Horticulture and the Creative Arts. She then went on to receive a master’s degree in Plant Sciences from the University of Rhode Island where her understanding of local sourcing and sustainability grew. This unique combination of artist and trained horticulturalist is special, and it’s what makes Sayles’s designs so impressive (and so relevant) to those of you looking to make a big splash with the least environmental impact.

Sayles Livingston Design began as a garden and cut flower business but has grown into a leading, and much lauded, event and floral design business. Her distinctive creations have been featured in over 30 national magazines and films, and she has won numerous awards, over many years, for her enchanting displays.

Are you a full-service design resource?

Though we specialize in floral design, my team can help you plan your entire event from linen choices to lighting design to the use of other props, furniture, plant material…you name it! We have a wide selection of items available for rent. But, if we don’t have something you need, we will find it for you!

Do you travel anywhere?

Yes. Truly.

How do you choose your flowers? Do you buy your flowers locally?

I personally select all the flowers that my team uses, paying special attention to quality while constantly searching for unusual varieties and colors.

We support local growers by using seasonal flowers and plants whenever possible. Some clients want locally-sourced flowers, and we can certainly make this happen, while others care more about globally-available varieties (e.g. peonies, hydrangea, roses, orchids, etc.), and we can make this happen too!

How does Sayles Livingston Design approach the environmental impacts of the event industry?

Our biggest challenges are energy efficiency, waste minimization, water consumption, procurement of products from like-minded eco-aware companies and communication with other vendors and clients. At Sayles Livingston Design, we are extremely mindful of the potential environmental impacts from our business and are constantly endeavoring to make changes and improvements.
