1. How did The Chanler come to be?
The story of The Chanler begins in 1870, when New York Congressman, John Winthrop Chanler started construction on the “cottage” that would one day become The Chanler at Cliff Walk. Completed in 1873 for the steep sum of $30,000, the mansion was built as a summertime retreat for Chanler and his wife Margaret Astor Ward, great granddaughter of the distinguished businessman and millionaire John Jacob Astor. From the time it left ownership of The Chanler family until the 1940s, the building went through many incarnations, yet was still primarily referred to as Cliff Lawn. The story of our hotel starts with the purchase of the property in 2000 by John and Jean Shufelt. They envisioned creating a luxury hotel and restaurant experience that had not been seen in New England. The project took three years to complete and in 2003, The Chanler at The Cliff Walk officially opened to the public. The Chanler is now owned and operated by John Shufelt’s daughter, Lani Shufelt. Lani emphasizes guest interaction as the distinguishing factor of The Chanler. Their hospitality is consistently awarded with numerous accolades by travel professionals in recent years. A combination of genuine hospitality and bespoke amenities has refreshed the experience for its future guests to appreciate.

The Chanler has had the honor of winning many awards throughout its existence. Most recently, in 2018, The Chanler was awarded a Gold badge by U.S. News & World Report which signifies The Chanler as one of the “Best Hotels in the USA”. The Chanler was also awarded the 2018 Travelers’ Choice Award by TripAdvisor. This award is given to only the top 1% of hotels on TripAdvisor, according to their ranking. Finally, The Chanler was again nominated in the 2018 Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards. Results with complete rankings will be announced in the August print issue.
4. Tell us about The Spiced Pear. What type of cuisine is served? How often does the menu change? Who is the Executive Chef?
At The Spiced Pear, thoughtful cuisine offers an inventive interpretation of classic New England dishes and French influences. Our menu changes seasonally which allows us to incorporate the freshest and most local ingredients. The Executive Chef is Matt Voskuil, who recently joined our team in February for our re-opening after our brief annual winter closing.
