1. How did The Chanler come to be?

The story of The Chanler begins in 1870, when New York Congressman, John Winthrop Chanler started construction on the “cottage” that would one day become The Chanler at Cliff Walk. Completed in 1873 for the steep sum of $30,000, the mansion was built as a summertime retreat for Chanler and his wife Margaret Astor Ward, great granddaughter of the distinguished businessman and millionaire John Jacob Astor. From the time it left ownership of The Chanler family until the 1940s, the building went through many incarnations, yet was still primarily referred to as Cliff Lawn. The story of our hotel starts with the purchase of the property in 2000 by John and Jean Shufelt. They envisioned creating a luxury hotel and restaurant experience that had not been seen in New England. The project took three years to complete and in 2003, The Chanler at The Cliff Walk officially opened to the public. The Chanler is now owned and operated by John Shufelt’s daughter, Lani Shufelt. Lani emphasizes guest interaction as the distinguishing factor of The Chanler. Their hospitality is consistently awarded with numerous accolades by travel professionals in recent years. A combination of genuine hospitality and bespoke amenities has refreshed the experience for its future guests to appreciate.

2. Can the entire hotel (including accommodations) be rented out for events?

Yes, the entire hotel including accommodations can be rented out for weddings/events. The Chanler has hosted numerous buyouts throughout its history.

3. Has The Chanler won any awards?

The Chanler has had the honor of winning many awards throughout its existence. Most recently, in 2018, The Chanler was awarded a Gold badge by U.S. News & World Report which signifies The Chanler as one of the “Best Hotels in the USA”. The Chanler was also awarded the 2018 Travelers’ Choice Award by TripAdvisor. This award is given to only the top 1% of hotels on TripAdvisor, according to their ranking. Finally, The Chanler was again nominated in the 2018 Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards. Results with complete rankings will be announced in the August print issue.

4. Tell us about The Spiced Pear. What type of cuisine is served? How often does the menu change? Who is the Executive Chef?

At The Spiced Pear, thoughtful cuisine offers an inventive interpretation of classic New England dishes and French influences. Our menu changes seasonally which allows us to incorporate the freshest and most local ingredients. The Executive Chef is Matt Voskuil, who recently joined our team in February for our re-opening after our brief annual winter closing.

Captivating Beauty at The Chanler

Secret garden elegance meets refined vintage glamour for this styled shoot tucked away at The Chanler on the Newport Cliff Walk.

Rich with history, The Chanler embodies old world elegance with its opulent architecture and gilded décor. The back lawn with its vast ocean views was the perfect canvas for an elegant, garden-like display of floral extravagance. Forgoing the traditional rectangular trellis, Sayles Livingston and her team at Sayles Livingston Design covered a circular trellis in peonies, ranunculus, garden roses, sweet peas, hydrangea, lemon leaf, eucalyptus, and ferns creating a romantic setting for the ceremony site that overlooked the ocean. The soft, neutral palette allowed Beth Chapman of the White Dress by the Shore to style the bridal party in rich, jewel tones and sumptuous textures like fur a gold embossed bridal gown as a nod to the autumn season. The entrance to the back trellis was draped with stormy-gray linens laced with greenery evoking a secret garden-like vibe as you walked up the steps. Crystal chandeliers floated above a traditional wooden table that was draped with a shadow gray velvet runner topped with lush flora that cascaded down to the stone patio creating a look of effortless luxury.

BLISSbash 2018 – a party to remember!

New England’s top event professionals, stylists, and visionaries alike gathered for BLISSbash at the newly renovated Waterfire Arts Center for the unveiling of our 2018 issue.

With infinite ceilings, vast windows, and raw industrial architecture, the event space at the Waterfire Arts Center was the perfect location to host BLISSbash. Greeted with their choice of our signature cocktails of the night; the Hi-Bliss-Cus Sparkler or the Forbidden Cocktail and a copy of the magazine, guests made their way inside. Two weathered iron beams framing a massive white wall provided a canvas for Ormonde Productions to project the pages of the magazine so everyone could see their breathtaking contributions on the big screen.

Savory passed hors d’oeuvres like duck confit sliders, avocado toast topped with fire-roasted corn, and buffalo chicken rangoon crafted by Russell Morin Catering & Events whet everyone’s appetite as they mingled and flipped through the pages of our 2018 issue. Lush floral arrangements in vibrant spring hues and soaring areca palms designed by Sayles Livingston Design softened the space making guests feels as though they were attending a swanky outdoor soiree in the tropics. Cozy lounge areas mixed with high-top tables from Party Rental LTD offered a variety of places to sit while guests feasted on the ethnic cuisine from each of the serving stations. A retro silver Airstream trailer-turned-mobile-bar by Hive Events offered a whimsical spot to get a refill on cocktails, beer, and wine. Decked out with marquee lights, a reclaimed wood bar, and a comfy seating area — once guests got in they didn’t want to leave! It was the perfect, unexpected touch of nostalgia that completed the night.
