Vendor Spotlight is on the Chapel Grille; a historical property located in Cranston, RI converted into an upscale restaurant and event space.
1. How did your business come to be?
The chapel, now the Chapel Grille, is part of American History! Sitting among the grounds of the former training school the property dates back to 1638 when it was deeded to the Westcott Family from Roger Williams and later sold to the State of RI in 1869. If you visit the Cathedral Bar you will see portraits of Priscilla and Stuckely Wescott III. In 1866, a state Board of Charities and Corrections was established and their initiative was to create a campus that would raise standards for the indigent. This Institutionalization would create a better, more organized environment where these young individuals would develop new habits of industry to prepare themselves for honest and productive lives. Carpionato Group purchased the property in 1999 and has transformed it into a unparalleled lifestyle center.
The chapel, built in 1891, and its infirmary addition administered the necessary spiritual and physical healing needed by the wayward youth. Originally designed by the Rhode Island based architectural firm of Stone, Carpenter and Wilson, it is one of the more handsome buildings on the property. With the direction and oversight of The Cranston Historic District Commission and The Rhode Island Historic Preservation & Heritage Commission Carpionato Group has preserved as much of the historic buildings as possible. The end result has created a breathtaking venue at every turn from the inside out.
