Vendor Spotlight On: Coral Pheasant Stationery

Vendor Spotlight is on: Coral Pheasant Stationery; exquisite designer of all things paper, Nichole Michel is truly a visionary in the world of stationery and beyond.

1. How did your business come to be?

Art has been in my blood for as long as I can remember and my parents encouraged my pursuits wholeheartedly. One of my earliest memories of creating was building my dollhouse with my Dad. Everything on that miniature house was handcrafted from laying the chimney brick by little brick, to wallpapering the walls using pages from discontinued wallpaper books, to building the furniture. I delighted in working with my hands to make sure the tiniest of details was perfect. In college, I followed my love of design by enrolling in a Fine Arts program and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. It was during those four years that I became infatuated with typography and knew that I had found my calling. After graduation I worked for a large consumer products company designing packaging, brochures and promotional pieces as well as art directing photo shoots. But what really tripped my trigger was outside the realm of my real gig: designing wedding invitations for recently engaged friends. (Yes, it’s a story many of us stationers share)! Custom invitations allowed me to combine my love of beautiful materials and tactile printing methods with out-of-the-box typography. When the time came to design my own wedding invitations, I pulled out all the stops and the process confirmed my true passion. Coral Pheasant Stationery was born!

2. What are the services you offer?

From Save the Dates, to the formal announcement to all of the day-of details, Coral Pheasant is a couple’s one stop shop for all things stationery. The complete paper purveyor!

3. Where are you located and how far will you travel to provide your service?

Coral Pheasant is located on the Connecticut shoreline in New Haven, Connecticut. If there is a great distance between us and the client – that is not a deterrent. We often work with clients whom we never have the pleasure of meeting live and in person. We collaborate with our long-distance couples via phone, email, and Skype and can share samples and swatches via snail mail. Truth be told, that’s often our process even with local couples!

4. How far in advance do you recommend clients to book?

Ideally, wedding invitations should be ordered 6-8 months before the event date. The custom design process usually takes 3 weeks and Coral Pheasant needs 3-4 weeks for printing and mailing the final product to you. However, the more time you allot for invitations, the more time we have to design and assemble your perfect invitation suite. Save the dates sometimes go out a year in advance, so contact us as soon as you’ve got all the logistics nailed down!

5. What is one piece of advice you always give to brides?

I think it’s really important for couple’s to seek out a stationer that aligns with their personal style – and personality. The design process can take several weeks or months and you certainly want to be collaborating with someone you enjoy working with! I love working with couples who appreciate the rules and break them just a bit to create hip, on-trend, thoughtful and highly personalized celebrations. If that’s you, let’s talk!
