Tropical coral, aqua, and pink harmonize to bring a laid back island vibe to the Newport Yachting Center
Newport, Rhode Island is a destination near to Mark and Elise’s hearts having both been raised in Rhode Island. They enjoyed the rich maritime history the city has to offer along with its welcoming nature and wanted to share that with their guests as most were traveling from out of town. The inspiration for their color story began with Mark’s proposal in Key West, Florida. Elise wanted to bring the laid back tropical vibe of the island to New England and did so by choosing a color palette of coral pink and peach with pops of soft aqua blues. Bountiful floral arrangements in bright coral, pink, and peach were perched upon tall clear vases at each dining table, while each cocktail table had smaller blooms in aqua mason jars. “Sayles, of Sayles Livingston Design was able to transform my vision into truly unique and spectacular floral displays. They far exceeded my expectations, and guests could not stop commenting on how phenomenal they were,” Elise raved.

Floral expert and enthusiast Sayles Livingston of Sayles Livingston Design shares her knowledge and insight on everything flowers!
1. How did you get into the floral design business?
I have a Masters Degree in Plant Sciences. I started designing with flowers and gardens when I was in college at Brown University. That was over 25 years ago!
2. What are your go-to and/or favorite flowers you suggest when a bride is unsure?
In this part of the world, my go-to flower is hydrangea. Not only do they feel like quintessential New England, coastal, lush, but they are pretty affordable! We just came back from visiting two of the farms where I import most of my hydrangea from, in Medellin Columbia. That was wonderful! But Peonies and lilac are my favorite. To me, they both smell like childhood, innocence, young romance. Couldn’t be better!
3. How far are you willing to travel to provide your services?
We have our second wedding in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica this year, so definitely pretty far!!
4. Are there any other vendors you partner with regularly?
Rhode Island has some of the best wedding planners, designers, caterers and photographers in the country. There are TONS of people and businesses here I love to work with. Every year I meet more talented professionals. We are lucky to have so much support for one another. Some of my very best friends work in the industry. Even my sister has a successful catering company in Rhode Island, Compton Clambakes and Catering. We are a tight knit group here.
5. What is the best advice you can give on how to pick your flowers?
1. Decide on a color palette (but don’t be intimidated, we can help you)
2.Decide on a design style (we can help you with this too)
3. Set a rough budget for your décor.
4. Choose your 3 favorite flowers (and 3 varieties you would be upset to see at your wedding)
5. Then let the professionals do what they do best! Within the parameters of color, design/style, budget and favorite flowers, or other specifics you may want to mention, the more freedom and flexibility that you give a designer, to be creative, the better result you will get!
Something that’s really important to me as a business woman is being able to provide creative and consistent work for many local people. This year, 3 of my kids are working for me as well. We have a great team here at Sayles Livingston Design; we care about each other and we care about our clients!
