It’s hard to believe another year has gone by! If you’re planning a 2016 winter wedding, get excited: It’s coming up quick. That’s why we checked in with Alexis O’Mara, owner of Unique Weddings By Alexis, to get her insight on the top trends to watch out for at the beginning of next year.

Forgo the flowers. Branches in centerpieces are hugely popular for winter weddings next year. There’s also more of a focus on height. Tall centerpieces add tons of elegance to the reception room.

Create a snow-like effect. Using crystals to catch the light can imitate the glimmer of a snowy night—a nice touch for a winter wedding. Reflective containers like mirrored vases also create a similar sparkle.

Serve something warm–or festive. A warm amuse-bouche paired with wine is a nice touch during the cocktail hour. A winter-themed signature drink is also a good idea—think something simple like Prosecco with a cranberry garnish or something more elaborate like iced spiked cider or a pumpkin sangria.

Set up a dessert station. For example, a made to order cannoli bar, a chocolate chip cookie station or fresh cider donuts. It’s more filling than a piece of cake.

Set the mood with a signature scent. A lot of venues can help you pump delicious scents into the reception to help guests experience a warm and relaxing environment. Some fun winter ideas include chocolate, peppermint or pine. The couple could also give out a custom candle that matches the scent as a favor. The Boston Candle Co. has tons of options.

Classic Elegance

With a menu of classic favorites like filet mignon, Chilean sea bass and crème brulee, Daveen and Brian chose The Palm Restaurant in Boston to host their wedding reception. Bright floral arrangements popped against the dark mahogany in the restaurant adding a touch of modern to the overall design aesthetic. A barrel casing a fine wine from their favorite winery, Nashoba Valley Winery served as the drink of the night. Setting the rhythm of the night was a live band that performed songs from classic Sinatra to top forty hits, a favorite among the guests. Favors were given in the form of a donation to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. A note card explaining the donation we set upon a champagne cork along with a St. Jude’s key-chain.

Sequin Splendor

Countless blush peonies adorned gold sequin covered tables bringing Erin’s vision for her wedding to life. “I wanted a style that incorporated my girly side by selecting pink, but also
adding an edgy twist to the whole palette with gold sequins.” When the time came to hire a
florist, she didn’t have to look far as her soon-to-be mother-in-law, Arlene, is a floral designer. Erin was concerned that the sequin linens would be overwhelming, but juxtaposed with the blush peonies created an elegant balance. Erin’s favorite day of the year is New Years Eve,
which also happens to be her birthday and was the inspiration for this beautiful wedding.
Chapel Grille helped to enhance the style of our event with their rustic and metallic colors of
gold. We knew we wanted something that worked with the room, so using the gold sequins as
the main color in our wedding helped to stay consistent with the atmosphere.” Mini succulent
plants were given as favors and added a modern organic touch to this classy celebration of
love.

ON CAKES: “You want to see actual images of the cakes the bake shop has made in the past, not stock photos.” Great advice from Artisan Bake Shop in Rochester, Massachusetts. They spilled more tips for picking out the perfect confection here.

ON HIRING A PLANNER: “Even if you think it’s not in your budget, it’s worth asking to find out the cost.” That’s what Scott Connery of Scott Connery Events suggests — in fact, he first offers a complimentary consultation to the bride and groom to find out if working together will work within their budget and meet their needs. Read about his services here.

ON LIGHTING: “Proper lighting is essential to any event.” That’s what we learned from Ryan Designs, a lighting and décor company based in Narragansett, Rhode Island. According to them, the options are endless for what you can do to reimagine any space.

ON TENTS: “Don’t forget to think through all the logistics.” That’s what Daniel Chase, cofounder of Chase Canopy, had to say about making arrangements to host your wedding beneath a tent. Logistics include power, running water, restroom trailers–planning ahead will save you tons of money in the long run, he said.
