Today we remember Gene DeCosta, the Owner of Root Catered Events and a friend of Bliss Publications who passed away last week after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Gene combined his degree in design with many years of experience working for Boston's finest restaurants and catering companies and his passion for great food and unique design evolved into Root Catered Events. He approached each event with excitement and enthusiasm as if it were his own and supported local farmers whenever possible. Gene believed in giving back and made a donation to The Arbor Foundation after each event to help support the environment.
We had the pleasure of working with Gene this past June on our first photo shoot of the 2013 edition and were shocked and deeply saddened to learn of his passing since we had no idea that he was ill at the time of the shoot- a testament for sure to his positive outlook and determination to live his life fully in the face of such a tremendous struggle.
We were just getting to know Gene and found him to be extremely genuine, kind, talented and energetic. Gene's best friend Mary Flynn joined us that day (she took this lovely photo of him in the field at the Cape Cod Lavender Farm) and shared with us his excitement about being a part of Bliss Celebrations. "That shoot was kind of a comeback for him — just 6 weeks after he had major surgery. It was a happy day for us because we really thought he was going to make it, but sadly his cancer returned in July. He went into the hospital with pneumonia last week and just didn't have the strength to fight any longer. He had such a presence and he will be greatly missed."
All of us at Bliss Publications will remember Gene fondly and are thankful to be able to share the beauty of what he created for us that day on the pages of the next issue of Celebrations.
We extend our deepest sympathies to all of Gene's family and friends.
