Real Nantucket Wedding by Brea McDonald Photography

Pulling colors of the surrounding seaside, Britt and Jonathan created a nautical Nantucket wedding at the Wauwinet.  From the bride, "We used natural, sea and island inspired colors (which are also some of our favorites and reflect the colors we use in our home’s interior as well) – ivory, sand, silver/pewter, green, sea glass, with a little navy mixed in for our wedding colors to give a nod to our nautical setting and tie in with the groomsmen’s blazers and Jonathan’s suit."  Other personal touches, like an olive oil cake mimicking the dessert the couple ate on the night they were engaged and wine served from the couple's home state of Washington as well as their engagement place, Spain, and one from their honeymoon locale (and heritage) Italy, were carefully thought out to make the day even more special.  Enjoy the fantastic photos from Brea McDonald Photography!

Reader Inspiration: Black, White and Pink Wedding

We love hearing from readers on Facebook that have a palette or theme they'd like to see our spin on.  Reader Katelyn Elizabeth asked us to create an inspiration board for her wedding next May in Black, White and Pink! Oh Katelyn, we adore this palette. It's classic, timeless, a little bit French, and a lotta fun! For our take on the tones, we started with these two images.  A mix of traditional (a tropical church in the softest shade of pink sand with trimmings of black and white) and Mod (a mid-century pink couch with playful pops of pattern) was our jumping off point.

A blush pink (rather than a bold fuschia) softens up the starkness of black and white.  (See page 18 for even more of our favorite blush pink ideas) Wouldn't a gown in just the slightest shade of pink be perfect for this wedding?  Or, if you'd rather wear white, maybe a bold pink reception dress would be the perfect fit?  can't forget the shoes!  These Badgley Mischka pumps are the frosting on the cake, or go a little bolder with booties from BHLDN!

For flowers, baby's breath is timeless, and creates a big WOW statement with it's frothy fresh look! Alternatively, anemonies are playful and almost a little mod, or just a clutch of tightly wrapped peonies in bold black and white ribbon add a contemporary statement.  Also contemporary, an overhead installation of ranunculus would be eye catching and dramatic!

For the bridesmaids, we think since it is May a lovely shade of pink would be perfect in either long or short style depending on your personal tastes, or alternatively (especially if you dare to get a pink gown) chic black cocktail dresses for the bridesmaids are always a hit with the ladies (they CAN wear a little black dress again) and looks stunning next to clutches of pastel blooms.

Nothing beats a classic black tuxedo for the groomsmen (and maybe a white tux for the groom?) except possibly a slick black tailored suit, edging again to that little bit of mod.  Whether it's bow tie or skinny tie, the look is totally timeless.

Details, Details! The world is your oyster, so to speak, with this timeless palette.  Play up the best features of your venue by choosing coordinating (or contrasting) types of decor.  Your planner can help you achieve this look, but for example if you are getting married in a ballroom, maybe choosing white mirrored tables or a classic blush pink silk linen would be best, whereas if you are in a barn or a tent, maybe you want to explore using whitewashed Tuscan farm tables?  Or, visa versa for an unexpected contrast!

One of the best investments for a black and white wedding, no matter the type of venue, that provides big drama for not such a big investment is a black and white dance floor.  They are classic, timeless, and they look amazing in photos!  We in fact chose one from Rentals Unlimited for our launch party this year, and couldn't have been more thrilled with the results. (see those images HERE).  It brought such a WOW statement into the room!

Stay true to your personal style, but play up your palette with little details, like these Black Martinique plates and chargers from Be Our Guest.  Choosing pretty pink envelopes with fun calligraphy and a playful polka dot invite would be a great way to announce the palette to your guests before they even arrive.

Serving up a signature sparkling rose at dinner or passed before your ceremony brings in that hint of blush, Then offering guests a springtime refresher during cocktail hour will put a pop of pink all around the room!

Wrapping favors or making ribbon wands with this sweet "Celebrate" ribbon from Object Splendor is another creative detail.  Painting votives and vases with bold black stripes would be a great DIY project to start, which would be a great look especially for cocktail hour tables! Have fun with it!

Placing pretty escort cards on a bed of blush carnations is a stunning scene setter when guests walk into the party. Alternatively, chess pieces are a fun nod to a couple who loves board games, and is already in tune with your palette.  Hanging black and white photos of relatives mixed with your engagement photos would also be great color coordinating details for the day.  Have them leaving at the end of the night with custom boxed black and white cookies will give them something to munch on back at the hotel.

A trio of petite and pretty black and white cakes is the perfect way to get multiple flavors to your guests with lots of sweetness and also provides a design element, like these fun pedestaled cakes from Something Different Cake Couture (photo of cakes and below: Kristin Spencer Photography).

One last tip, let your photographer know your theme/color palette when you are going over your details with them.  They may have suggestions on great places to take formal but fun photos that bring in the palette, making your pictures that much more viable to magazine and blog editors (wink wink!), but also when your photographer is laying out your wedding album, it will look seamless if they can bring in all the elements of the day with a unified palette.
