It’s not necessarily where a chef hails from that defines their food persona, rather where they have been that influences their culinary vision. “Committed to sourcing seasonal market-driven ingredients highlighting local farms and artisans to create a genuine and delightful dining experience” Tallulah on Thames partners, Chef Jake Rojas and Kelly Ann Maurice (along with her brother Keith) may have met in California, but have created a farm to table experience here in Newport that, in a short period of time, has garnered critical acclaim and landed chef Rojas on the short list for Food & Wine's The People's Best New Chef 2011 for his modern American cuisine.
Although national recognition certainly helps to put a restaurant on the map it is local love that keeps it there and it looks like Tallulah on Thames will have to get used to the “best of “ recognition being bestowed upon them from a regional level as well (Yankee Magazine “Best of New England” editors choice 2011 for Best Chowder, “RI Best Gourmet Burger” Go Local Prov, Best Organic Restaurant in Greater Providence…) and being relative newcomers to the RI restaurant scene has this ambitious team hard at work developing new ways to bring their food to their fans while gaining new devotees along the way.
You can enjoy Chef Rojas’ fresh and innovative cuisine at their small, but charming restaurant at 464 Thames Street in Newport where they also offer private dining experiences perfect for any special occasion, downstairs in the “Tallulah” dining room or upstairs in their open lounge space overlooking Thames Street. Chef Rojas can also be found at local farmers markets serving fresh tacos from his food truck Tallulah’s Tacos (when do these people sleep?) and also in the works is a “to go” menu featuring sandwiches, boxed lunches and “Thanksgiving To Go” in November of this year!
